The Olympic Symbol - Beijing Olympics 2008

The Olympic symbol is a symbol that people from each and every country of the world can relate to and understand no matter which language they speak or what their culture is. Although the five rings is the most widely known Olympic symbol throughout the world it is not the only Olympic symbol used by the International Olympic Committee today.

According to the IOC, the Olympic flag is the most important Olympic symbol because it symbolizes the official beginning and end of this magnificent event. There are many different Olympic flags that are used in the head of state offices and major political buildings throughout the hosting country to symbolize their honour of hosting such an event. Each time a flag is passed on to a President or head of state it is an official ceremony by the IOC to officially pass it on.

Of course the Olympic emblem is one of the most recognized symbols throughout the world today. The five interlocking rings of blue, black, yellow, red and green on a white background has been the Olympic symbol since 1914. These five rings were created to represent the five different areas of the world which are involved in the Olympics and what it stands for. Although this emblem was not widely popular or understood during its beginning, it took until the proceedings of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin to initiate its wide popularity.

Olympic Games 2008 Symbol

This 1936 Olympic Games was the first of the opening ceremonies which become a tradition. The hosting country of Berlin wanted a flag and other memorabilia holding the five rings as the official symbol of the games and how it unites all the countries throughout the world. Although there are many different myths about beliefs about these five interlocking rings, the common assumption and belief of the modern games is that these rings purely and simply represent the uniting of each and every country in the world.

In regards to the mascots of the Olympic Games, this has been known to vary depending on the hosting country. Each and every hosting country has the ability to choose the most relevant mascot of course with the approval from the International Olympic Committee. In the past there have been a beaver for Canada, a red Jaguar for Mexico City, an Eagle for Los Angeles and the list goes on and on. Each of these mascots not only represents the hosting country but the unity and ultimate message of the Olympic Games.

It is amazing to think how much influence and respect the various symbols, mascots and emblems of the Olympic Games have received over the centuries and throughout the modern times. These symbols were created for the simple reasons of unity and over all these years and many different Olympic events, the same message still holds true today. These symbols were not only created for the participants in the games but for the spectators and for the chosen host countries as well. The Olympics is not an event held only for those qualified to compete but for everyone around the world to cheer and encourage their home countries in a festival that has been ongoing for centuries.
