Although there have been some large misconceptions about the special Olympics and the Paralympics, these are in fact two separate events that take place and were established by the International Olympic Committee. The main difference between the two events is the level of disability between the athletes taking part in the events and the games. Also, the Special Olympics are the only organization that the International Olympic Committee has given permission to use the world "Olympics".
Special Olympics - Beijing 2008
The Special Olympics world games are the largest games and events that are held on a yearly basis for people of 8years and older with intellectual disabilities. There are more than 2.2 million people with intellectual disabilities participate in more than 200 different programs in more than 160 different countries from around the world. They have the option to participate in local, state, country and then worldwide events depending on their skill and athletic abilities. It is clear that the Special Olympics provide long term benefits for the participants which include self-esteem and social integration.
On the other hand, the Paralympics is an event which holds elite sports for athletes with disabilities, primarily physical disabilities. The International Paralympics Committee (IPC) organizes and oversees these events throughout the world. This committee offers 25 different sporting events for people of all ages to compete in from many different countries from around the world. The IPC is a non-profit organization which has paired up with several different disability organizations to make these events happen each and every year.
2008 Paralympics Games
The 2008 Paralympics Games will be held in Beijing, China of the Republic of China. There are six different groups of disabilities which are eligible for to enter these elite games. The Paralympics games have always been held the same year as the Olympics although these games have grown significantly since the beginning days. The Winter Paralympics games will be held in 2010 within the city of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Although the Paralympics receives far more publicity than the Special Olympics, both of these organizations and events are very beneficial to not only the participants but their families and the millions of disabled people from around the world who have the opportunity to watch this event from their homes or in person. You can watch the Paralympics from your homes or in person from September 6-17 of 2008 as it will be televised from many different broadcasts throughout the world.
The 2008 program for the Paralympics includes 20 different sporting events including:

- Power Lifting
- Rowing
- Sailing
- Volleyball
This is just a small sample of the different events people from around the world have the privilege to compete in. This is a special honour for the disabled people from every country in the world to take part in something of equal value of the Olympics and during the same year and cycle as well.
