2008 Beijing Olympic Movements
The Olympic Games is an event that takes hundreds of different people and committees to organize and bring together. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) is the oldest and original Olympic committee which was created in 1984 by Pierre de Coubertin. This committee includes over 206 members which are all based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
This committee has been organizing winter and summer Olympics throughout the world since their very first event in 1896. This summer Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. The first winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France, 1924. The IOC decided to hold the summer and winter Olympic Games in the same four year turn and this began in 1992. When the year 1994 came the IOC chose to change the winter Olympic Games to the even years between the summer games to increase the space between the games to encourage proper planning.
When it comes to the mission of the IOC it is obvious their primary goal is to promote and advertise the Olympic Games to each and every country throughout the world. As the Olympic Games are held high as the most prestigious athletic event in the world, this is not a hard task. Their job includes tasks such as encouraging and supporting the health of the participating athletes, promoting ethics and cooperation between different countries and cultures and the list goes on and on. The IOC has been incredibly successful in this area of regulations and cooperation since their beginning.
The IOC meets once a year even when the Olympic Games are not scheduled for another 2-3 years. This is called the IOC Session. Here the members of the IOC take votes on issues such as IOC presidency and more. Their votes are always final. In order to become an IOC member, the members are generally elected by existing members. A member can not be re-elected in the event the other members do not feel they are contributing to the cause of the Olympic Games, they resign or they fail to attend the IOC Sessions during the year.

When the time comes for countries around the world to begin the bidding for the winter or Summer Olympic Games, they become very aggressive in the hopes that their bid will be accepted by the IOC. Most of the members within the IOC represent the hosting countries from around the world. The members then vote every four years after the Olympic Games for the next hosting country for each season.
The IOC is a committee that has been very important to the Olympic Games since the very beginning when it was held in Athens. This committee is vital to maintaining the status of the Olympic Games as well as the Olympic Movement as a whole which not only organizes this extraordinary event but they promote and advertise its revenue and athletes as well. The members of the IOC take great pride in organizing such a large and prestigious event such as the Olympic Games and this is only one of the many reasons why the IOC will always exist as long as athletes and people from around the world are still interested in the highest level of competition.
