Winter Olympics History

The Winter Olympic Games were not held as far back as the Summer Olympics because of course the Greek environment was not able to hold such events as skiing and other popular winter sports. The Winter Olympics began when the IOC (International Olympic Committee) chose to include the sport of ice skating into the Summer Olympic Games in 1908.

There were many different propositions held throughout the years to the IOC but they refused the idea of the Winter Olympics again and again. The IOC agreed to hold one week of winter sports for the Summer Olympic Games which include ice skating, hockey and speed skating. It was not until 1926 that the International Olympic Committee that the first Winter Olympic Games were scheduled to be held in Chamonix.

This first Winter Olympic Games held over 200 athletes from over 16 different nations from around the world. The first event on the list of winter events was the 500m speed skating event which produced the first Winter Olympic Game victor. During this first winter Olympic Games, Finnish and Norwegian athletes dominated the competitions.

Winter Olympic Games

During the times of the first Winter Olympic Games there were many different wars and civil actions that prevented the games from continuing. The Winter Games which were meant to be held in 1940 within the host of Japan, had to be given back to the IOC because Japan was invaded by China at the time during World War II. The IOC then chose St.Moritz, Switzerland but it took only 3months to follow before the IOC took this honour back because of arguments with members of the Switzerland government. The games of 1940 were eventually cancelled altogether because of the intensity of World War II.

Because of Switzerland's neutral position in World War II, they were the first country to hold the Winter Olympic Games after the war. Twenty-eight different countries competed in these events, although athletes from Germany and Japan were not invited to compete. The skiing events were expanded during these games and the skeleton returned to the games as well after 20 years.

Although in the beginning, it was not an easy task to incorporate the winter events into the already established traditions of the ancient Greek Summer Olympics, it was something the world was waiting for. Many athletes from dozens of different countries were able to begin competing in the winter sports they love, against those thought to be the best in the world. The next Winter Olympic Games will be held in British Columbia, Canada in 2010. Here athletes can experience the skiing and snow that only Canada receives each and every winter season.

The Winter Olympic Games not only are equal to that of the Summer Olympic Games today but many people have developed a preference for one or the other depending on their personal interests. The Winter Olympics have endured throughout the years and are today an equal part of the Olympic tradition that the IOC has worked so hard to establish and maintain.
