Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games
The next Winter Olympic Games are scheduled to be held in the year 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Both the Olympic Games and the Paralympics Games are going to be held and organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee. This will be the third Olympic Games held by Canada. Throughout history Canada has been the host to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and the soon to be 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
According to Olympic tradition the mayor of Vancouver, Sam Sullivan, received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy. There was a special flag raising ceremony upon their return to British Columbia to ring in the special honour they had received. This same flag will be on display at the city hall in Vancouver until the opening ceremonies in 2010.
There are 15 different winter sports which are to be included in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Eight of these are ice sports, three are alpine and four are Nordic events. All of these events have been included in previous winter games with the exception of one new inclusion of skicross.
For the first time in Olympic history, the winter Olympic Games will be held right on the sea and many of the venues which are to be used in Vancouver for the games are directly at sea level as well. Another first for the Olympic Games is for the first time the opening ceremonies are going to be held indoors. Vancouver is setting a great many new standards within the strict traditions of the Olympic Games as Vancouver is the warmest city ever to hold the Winter Olympic Games.
The BC Place Stadium is where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held as well as the nightly medal ceremonies. Some of the other venues throughout Vancouver which are to be used to training, events and for athletes in general include:
- Vancouver Olympic Village
- Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre
- GM Place
- Pacific Coliseum
- Hillcrest Park
Each of these venues will be used for either athletic training to the host of one of the 15 different winter sporting events to be included in these 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Whistler Mountain is going to be the host of many of the alpine sporting events as this mountain is famous for its great skiing conditions and the perfect location to host some of the most talented skiers in the world.
Of course, there are some who oppose within and around Vancouver regarding their hosting the Winter Olympics. People and residents are concerned with their rising taxes, destruction of their natural environment in Vancouver and a quick loss of affordable housing. The Olympic Games do bring a great deal of opportunity to the hosting countries, but they also bring high expenses and create an expensive society for the current residents. These are complaints that each and every hosting country and experiences and Vancouver is no different. They intend to hold this historical event with grace and finesse when the year 2010 arrives.
