Olympics Sports Events
The Olympic Games for summer and winter is an event that includes many different sports from many different origins. When the Olympics first began they held only the summer games and it was not until 20years after the very first Olympics where the interest in winter sports began. For over 100 years, athletes and spectators from around the world have had the pleasure to participate in summer and winter sports as well as watching them as well.
Both the summer and the winter Olympic Games are constantly admitting new and different sporting events to the program with of course the final voting done by the IOC. Some of the most common and most popular Olympic sports events you will see include:
- Boxing
- Hockey
- Luge
- Curling
- Swimming
- Gymnastics
- Football
- Skating
- Volleyball
- Tennis
- Skiing
Of course this is just a very small taste of the different and popular sports that are seen and participated in during the winter and summer Olympic Games.
There were many sports that were once included in the Olympic Games but were at one time eliminated from the program to either include newer sports events or because of the lack of popularity within these sports. Events such as:
- Golf
- Tug of War
- Rugby
- Polo
- Water Skiing
- Lacrosse
- Power Boating
All of these sports events listed above have become apart of Olympic history. They were once very popular and recognized sports by the IOC but over the years their popularity died down and the need to include more athletic sporting events took over the interest in such diverse and unique events. Although these sporting events are no longer practiced within the Olympic Games, they still left their mark in history and many athletes from around the world took part in these events at one time or another.
Today, the list of average sporting events has continued to remain the same overall for many years. Although there are always new events added and some sporting events replaced, the general list remains the same for both the summer and winter Olympic Games. Although the list of sporting events for the actual Olympic Games remains the same, the list of recognized sports by the IOC continues to grow.
There are dozens of different recognized sporting events that the IOC has placed under its wing but they have yet to make it to the Olympic Games. Sports such as surfing, bowling, karate and more have been put on a special list that the IOC has deemed recognizable as alternatives for the winter and/or summer Olympic Games. As the Olympic Games are something that has been carried on for centuries by tradition and central values, the IOC cannot simply change the sporting events that have been involved in the Olympics for years. Thousands of famous athletes from around the world have been training their entire lives to participate in the Olympics and they count on their sport always being there for them.
