Olympics 2008 - Extraordinary Sports Events

Although the winter and summer Olympic Games have maintained basically the same sporting events and competitions for the past few decades, there are many different types of sports that were once involved in the Olympics and that one day will be again. The Olympics is run by tradition and therefore maintaining their status and values is something the IOC (International Olympic Committee) is responsible for.

Throughout the history of the Olympic Games there have been many different types of sports included in the games that may to some people seem to be very unorthodox. The Olympic Games have evolved a great deal over the years and today many people look forward to watching skiing, swimming, boxing and many others of the common sports that have always been included in the games. For those of you interested in learning what the historical Olympic Games included you will be surprised to learn that they may one day return to the games in the future.

Some of the most extraordinary sports events that have been included in the Olympic Games include:

  • Water Skiing
  • Polo
  • Tug of War
  • Surfing
  • Lacrosse
  • Golf
  • Rugby

Although many of these events are very common for many people, they are considered to be very unique and extraordinary events for the Olympic Games. Many athletes are still out there waiting for some of these events to be included once again into the Games so they can show the world what they can do. You may be surprised to learn that many of these extraordinary events have recently been recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

When a sport is recognized by the IOC, this means that they find these sports have enough popularity and athletes throughout the world to make this a new and successful Olympic Games event, no matter what the season. Although there are many different extraordinary sporting events that have been recognized they are still a long way away from being included in the Olympic Games.

For those people who have been watching the Olympic Games for many years, you can see how a few of the recognized sports have made their way into the Olympic Games such as the recent addition to the Winter Olympic Games, snowboarding which has created a younger and more youthful watching audience as well as athletes as well. Over the next few years there will be more and more extraordinary and unique sporting events added to the Olympic Gaming programs which will not only attract new and younger athletes but will attract younger spectators as well.

The Olympic Games have been a part of the world's culture for centuries and to maintain their status and popularity, the IOC has no choice but to continue mixing up the sporting events and adding newer and more popular sports to keep the Olympics at the status they have spent so many years working to achieve. At one time all the current sporting events in the Olympic Games were extraordinary to the current societies and the IOC is looking to do the same thing within the next 20 years.
